When on a budget...City Hostel!

It is true that our travel guide that is oriented towards institutions that offer great service and good quality. So far we have mentioned the most upscale places in Skopje. This is the reason why we have decided to post about the best rated hostel in Skopje - City Hostel. With price range starting from 6 euros, City Hostel offers the tourists great accommodation, shuttle to the airport and view on the lovely Vodno Mountain for less. Very close to the center, a taxi ride would probably cost you 1.5 EUR or 2 USD. So why not spend the money on shopping instead of accommodation?

"Burek" - Breakfast in Style

Mornings in Macedonia usually start with breakfast on work or breakfast with the family. However, there's one thing we've all tried for breakfast - burek (cheese pie). This famous triangle-shaped pitas can be found in every "Buregdzilnica" ( which is a word for place where burek is sold). On every corner is one of this stores that sell different types of burek pita like meat pie, the already mentioned cheese pie, nowadays famous pizza  burek, spinach pie, kulen burek etc. The price varies by the size, if you order 1/4 it is round
40 Denar ( 1 USD), for 1/8 is 25 Denar (0.50 USD) per slice.
What goes better with a slice of burek than a glass of cold yogurt?

When the sun shines it's time for "Kala"!

Yesterday in Skopje was raining, today the sun in shining. They say when the sun shines its blinding, we say when the sun shines it's time for "Kala".
There is a group on Facebook "If you don't know where is Kala, you are not from Skopje"  (http://www.facebook.com/pages/AKO-NE-ZNAES-KADE-E-KALA-TI-NE-SI-OD-SKOPJE/115328975166109?fref=ts ), so in our book we had to dedicate a post to our favorite hot spot for coffee. "Kala" is located on the most famous summer street "Leninova", where the foreigners can see a lot of restaurants, "Sushico" and "Kljusa" are located here as well, and has a stunning terrace, made for sunny days. On summer days, this street is full with people usually when the season starts in the months of May and June. The service is great, the baristas and bartenders are certified and you will made the right choice whether you order coffee or cocktail.
Enough speaking, we are heading to "Kala", are you coming?

When it rains,it's time for Hot Chocolate "Njami" @ Arabesque Lounge Bar

When it rains it pours...this morning I've read this quote on twitter and it inspired me to write this blog about "what to do when in rains in Skopje". First of all, you should take a cab! No rain is excuse for a bad hair day! Luckily, like on the streets in NYC, locals are selling umbrellas on the street for the price of 50-100 denar (1.5 EUR or 2 USD). Then you have two choices, whether you want to go shopping ( we suggest - Skopje City Mall http://skopjecitymall.mk/skopje-city-mall-mk , or if your choice is coffee with friends we suggest Arabesque Lounge Bar which is our hot spot for urban atmosphere, food and decor. Black velvet chairs and orange chandeliers make a deluxe atmosphere. Probably this is the best place for smokers. If you didn't know the law in Macedonia prohibits smoking inside so this restaurant has a stunning terrace which is warm and safe when it rains all year round.

The authors of Skopje in Style recommend:
Hot Chocolate "Njami" - real Barista specialty!

Magazine in Style - BarCode !

Five years ago, in July 2007 began the publishing of the first and only magazine devoted to raise the bar and restaurant standards in Macedonia. Starting with the quote "...in Macedonia the appetizer, the entree and the dessert are still served with the same utensils..."the editor in chef, Radmila Pavlovska has opened a new era in the hospitality world. Continuously working on improving the standards and collaborating with journalists from all over the world, Radmila Pavlovska has really made great changes and helped a lot of businesses improve their techniques whether there's a word for cocktails recipe, or ways of serving the food, design of the bar, catering tips etc. For the authors of Skopje in Style it is really an honor to be part of a really professional magazine and be able to share the NY experience. The Magazine BarCode is published on every 2 months, and is distributed to all restaurants and bars AT NO CHARGE. It is a free sample of great quality.

I wouldn't want to speak more about the magazine itself, but I wold like to share some of the articles that has personally impressed me:
